What does Council Tax band F mean for a property?

F begins just above E’s £120,000 upper boundary and includes a historical value of exactly £160,000. The next band, G, starts at £160,001. Use the date with those amounts: without “1 April 1991”, the range can easily be mistaken for a current market-price category.

The same broad house type can appear in different bands. Before judging whether an F entry looks too high, confirm the exact property on the official register. For conversions or flats, make sure a listing refers to your dwelling rather than the entire original building.

Why the F-to-G gap differs from the G-to-H gap

E, F and G progress through eleven, thirteen and fifteen parts of the D reference amount. Each neighbouring step here is two-ninths of D. H then moves to eighteen parts, so the G-to-H increment is larger. Counting letters alone does not reveal the size of every charging step.

At the 2026/27 England average band D of £2,392, F would be about £3,455 before individual adjustments. E would be about £532 lower and G about £532 higher. These are matched-locality comparisons; they do not mean an F bill in one council area must sit between E and G bills elsewhere.

Find the amount actually due for an F home

Look for the total F charge for your council and any relevant parish, then compare it with your annual bill. Instalments, reductions and part-year responsibility can make a bank payment smaller than a simple division of the published full rate.

If your bill displays an adjustment, distinguish the registered band from the amount being charged. A discounted bill is not enough to establish a change to the valuation record. Ask your council about the bill; follow the band challenge guidance only if the assessment itself appears wrong.

Band F and the £100 payment: keep schemes separate

F is outside England’s announced A–D payment scope. Other help, including Council Tax Reduction, has its own requirements. Contact the council about difficulty paying instead of assuming that the energy announcement is the only support route available.

Questions about Council Tax band F

What fraction of band D is Council Tax band F?

The standard England F charge is thirteen-ninths of D, approximately 144.4% of the D amount for the same locality, before individual adjustments.

Does an F property have to be detached?

No. A band cannot be confirmed from a property-type label. Check the registered dwelling and the historical valuation basis rather than relying on appearance or bedroom count.

Does paying an amount like band D make my F home eligible for £100?

A bill adjustment is not proof that the registered property band has changed. F is outside the announced A–D scope; households in bands E–H can ask their council about the extra £100 million fund for those hit hardest by energy bills.
