Councils set their own rates, and discounts, exemptions or Council Tax Reduction change what a household actually owes. Two band C homes in different council areas can have quite different bills. Use the Council Tax calculator to work out a bill from your own council’s band D figure.

Which Council Tax bands get the £100 energy payment?

The England announcement covers bands A, B, C and D. Bands E, F, G and H are outside that announced band scope. The payment goes to the person liable for Council Tax on their main home; second homes and empty properties are excluded. Households in E–H may get help from a £100 million council fund.

Use the £100 energy payment checker for guidance that keeps those uncertainties visible.

What if your Council Tax band appears to be wrong?

Compare the official register and your bill first. If you have evidence the assessment is incorrect, use the official challenge route. A challenge is free, but a review can leave the band unchanged or result in a higher band.

Do not challenge solely to obtain a payment. Read our guide to challenging a band.
