What is the highest Council Tax band in England?
H is the top of the English A–H scale. A historical value of exactly £320,000 is still G; an assessment above that is H. There is no additional English category to enter simply because a historical value is far above the threshold.
Wales has a different system with a band I and a 2003 valuation date. Do not use a Welsh table to interpret an English H entry. Our Wales guide explains why local arrangements need to be checked separately.
Council Tax band H vs G and D: twice D does not mean twice G
How much is Council Tax band H? In 2026/27 the average band H charge in England is £4,784 a year — about £398.67 per month over twelve instalments, or £478.40 over the usual ten. How much is Council Tax band H compared with G?
The standard H multiplier is eighteen-ninths of D, while G is fifteen-ninths. H is therefore 20% above G for the same locality, not twice G. The “twice” comparison belongs to D. At the 2026/27 England average band D of £2,392, the H total would be £4,784.
An even more valuable property inside H does not acquire a larger multiplier just because it is further above the threshold. The band sets the standard proportion; the relevant local rate and any individual adjustments determine the bill.
Budgeting for a band H bill in 2026/27
Begin with the council’s full H amount for your address. At that England average, £4,784 would be £478.40 in ten equal instalments or about £398.67 in twelve. Those are national averages, not a real council’s tariff.
A bill may also reflect liability for only part of a year or other adjustments. Do not double an already discounted D bill to predict a different household’s H bill. Compare the standard charges on the same basis, then ask the council about the adjustments relevant to you.
Can a band H household get the £100 energy payment?
H is outside the announced A–D property scope in England. The standard charge being twice D does not mean the household receives two payments, or any entitlement under this announcement. Bands E–H are outside the £100 payment, but councils share an extra £100 million to help households outside A–D.
If you need help paying Council Tax, ask your council about reduction and support options. If the registered assessment seems wrong, use the official, free band challenge route with evidence rather than paying for an alleged energy-payment shortcut.
Questions about Council Tax band H
Is there a Council Tax band above H in England?
No. England’s highest band is H. Wales has an additional band I under its own valuation system; that does not create an I band for English properties.
Does every band H home pay the same amount?
Not across England. H has the same standard proportion of D, but the local D rate varies by locality. Individual bill adjustments can also change what is due.
Does a much higher current house price increase the H multiplier?
The standard English H proportion remains eighteen-ninths of D. A modern sale price does not create a new band above H or a separate multiplier within H.
